Now you may be wondering why people even started dressing up on this spooky night? The significance of Halloween costumes originates from the Celtic era. During this time period, Celtic people held the belief that on the night of October 31st spirits from the underworld and ghosts from the dead could rise and cross over into the land of the living. They also believed that these spirits and ghosts could harm them or take them back to the underworld. If they left their homes individuals would dress up as spirits and ghosts hoping to confuse the real ones and thus protect themselves. Since then, Halloween has continuously evolved as it spread throughout various countries and was further shaped by western cultural influences. Today the tradition of the costume remains and is paired with Trick-or-Treating. This is an activity for children where they visit homes in their neighbourhoods dressed in their costumes. They ring doorbells and when someone answers they call out “trick-or-treat,” meaning they hope to receive a candy and if they do not get anything they will play a trick but usually they get a treat! Additional customs practiced today include decorating homes and yards and some even create life-size replicas of graveyards or haunted houses. Other popular activities include costume parties or watching horror movies.
Accordingly, to commemorate the true essence of Halloween why not get dressed up and celebrate this spooky time of year in style. Get your whole family involved, pets included! Show us your spirit and you could be a contest winner!
